3-22-2014 – SAMANTHA FISH
Have you been following Samantha’s career? If not, you should take notice now, she is all over the place, pouring her heart out in her music, her shows, backing her favorites, never forgetting her fans. She is the whole package with icing on the cake. Kansas City-based Samantha Fish has been on a major roll ever since she teamed up with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde on Ruf’s 2011 release, Girls with Guitars. Fueled by the trio’s Blues Caravan tour of Europe and the U.S., she created an international buzz in the blues world. Later that same year she recorded “Runaway,” her debut on Ruf, which mixed gutsy riff-blues rockers like “Down In The Swamp” with the mellow small-hours jazz of “Feelin’ Alright,” and earned her a string of rave reviews and radio airplay, climaxed by her winning the Blues Music Award (BMA) for “Best New Artist Debut” in 2012. Earlier this year Samantha joined labelmate Devon Allman for a sultry duet of the Tom Petty classic, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Rather than trying to duplicate her first success, on her latest release, ‘Black Wind Howlin’,’ Samantha re-defines her sound throughout the tracks. She can be brutally rocking on cuts like the tour bus snapshot of “Miles To Go” (“Twelve hours to Reno/ten hours til the next show”), the swaggering “Sucker Born” (“Vegas left me weary, LA bled me dry/skating on fumes as I crossed the Nevada line…”) and the venomous “Go To Hell” (“Oh, this ain’t my first rodeo/You hit yourself a dead end/Your voodoo eyes, ain’t gonna cast a spell/So you can go to hell!”). It wasn’t that long ago that a teenaged Samantha Fish showed up at her local Kansas City blues club, Knuckleheads Saloon, and began soaking up the sounds of visiting modern blues guitar masters like Mike Zito and Tab Benoit, then going back to ’80s heroes like Stevie Ray Vaughan and following the lineage to the pre-war Delta masters. “I fell in love with it,” she told Premier Guitar of her growing passion for the form, “and started doing my homework by listening to the old guys like Son House and Skip James.” With those influences as her template, Samantha incorporated the sounds of the classic rock of The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, The Black Crowes and even a tip of the hat to Heart, in putting together a sound that would become her own. “It’s all the sounds I grew up with,” she explained at the time, “with my own spin.” It’s been a wild ride for Samantha Fish and she has proven her staying power every inch of the way. I don’t have to tell you to get here early for this one. You already know it will be crazy and fun.

3-28-2014 – FARRENHEIT
Charlie Farren and David Hull met when both were with The Joe Perry Project in 1980. After touring with The Project in support their CBS record, “I’ve Got The Rock And Rolls Again.” it became clear that Aerosmith was on a path to re-unite. Charlie and David decided to form their own, new band and began writing and experimenting with band formats, eventually choosing a trio format after meeting drummer John Muzzy In 1986 Charlie, David, and Muzz formed Farrenheit and released a self titled debut album on Warner Bros. Three singles from that album, “Fool in Love,” “Bad Habit,” and “Lost in Loveland,” as well as video exposure on MTV and extensive touring established Farrenheit as one of the premier new rock acts and won band awards and kudos across the country. But more importantly, it won the band fans, who responded to the potent combination of well-written songs delivered by a powerful, veteran rock trio. “We signed with Warner Brothers on the strength of our songwriting and performance,” explains Charlie Farren. Farrenheit really never fit with the big hair and tattoo crowd that emerged shortly after the debut Farrenheit CD came out in 1987. It’s probably why that CD still sounds fresh and why the songs still work.

4-3-2014 – NELLIE MCKAY
“Supremely gifted, charming, and darkly funny.” – Washington Post Nellie McKay – Hailed by the New Yorker as “funny and touching, ceaselessly clever and scarily talented,” Nellie just finished an extended run in the off-Broadway hit Old Hats (winner of the Lucille Lortel award for Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience and Drama Desk award for Outstanding Revue), and has written two acclaimed musical biographies, “Silent Spring: It’s Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature” an exploration of environmental pioneer, Rachel Carson, and “I Want to Live!” the story of Barbara Graham, third woman executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin. The show “combines McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes the New York Times. “In the most lighthearted way they evoke a heartless environment of social injustice in which people who fall through the cracks are invisible to everyone else.” Nellie produced her critically acclaimed, debut double album “Get Away From Me” with Beatles’ engineer Geoff Emerick, followed by “Pretty Little Head, Obligatory Villagers, Normal as Blueberry Pie: A Tribute to Doris Day,” (“among the killer overhauls of American standards” – The New York Times), and her latest, “Home Sweet Mobile Home.” She has won a Theatre World Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum in the Broadway production of “The Threepenny Opera” and performed onscreen in the film “PS I Love You,” as well as writing original music for the Rob Reiner film “Rumor Has It” and contributing to the New York Times Book Review. Her music has been heard on the TV shows Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Weeds, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS and Nurse Jackie, and McKay has appeared on numerous TV shows including Late Show with David Letterman (with the Brooklyn Philharmonic). A recipient of The Humane Society’s Doris Day Music Award in recognition of her dedication to animal rights, Nellie is known as an outspoken and fierce advocate for feminism, civil rights and other deeply felt progressive ideals.

4-11-2014 – SEAMUS KENNEDY
Irish Entertainer – and so much more! Seamus Kennedy, originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been entertaining audiences all over the United States for the past 32 years. His ready wit and vast store of songs will make you forget your cares for a while as he encourages the crowd to sing along to silly lyrics and daft ditties. He travels from Alaska to Florida, Maryland to California, performing for audiences which range from Popes and presidents to bartenders and bricklayers, from college students to kindergartners. But the Irish have their serious side too, and when Seamus performs one of the more somber ballads such as Tommy Sands’ There Were Roses or Pete St. John’s Dublin In The Rare Old Times you can hear a pin drop as the words sink in. That moment of silence before the applause can raise goosebumps. Washington Area Music Awards (WAMA): Best Irish/Celtic Male Vocalist, Ten Years Running -1993-2002.

4-12-2014 – PAUL RISHELL & ANNIE RAINES (Ballroom)
When 22-year-old harmonica ace Annie Raines first sat in with 42-year-old country blues guitarist Paul Rishell in a Boston bar in 1992, few in the crowd suspected that they were witnessing the beginning of a musical partnership that would span the next fifteen years and counting. After 22 years and six albums, Paul Rishell and Annie Raines have become the blues’ most dynamic duo. As a working team, they have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe, collaborated on original songs and released “I Want You To Know,” “Moving To The Country,” the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year, “Goin’ Home,” which was nominated for two Handy Awards and the live recording “A Night in Woodstock,” featuring special guests John Sebastian, Bruce Katz, and their own backing band, Mojo Rodeo, joining the duo for an eclectic, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs. Each release earned multiple Blues Music Award nominations. Paul & Annie have a special way of transforming an audience. As soon as they start playing, their great talent and good vibes lets you relax, forget your cares and smile like you haven’t done for awhile. Critics are smiling on them too. Reviewing their CD/DVD set, “A Night in Woodstock,” Elijah Wald wrote in the Boston Globe “the high energy, fast-moving set of mostly blues tunes features Rishell sounding his usual fantastic self on acoustic, electric and National Steel Guitars and Annie Raines retaining her Queen of the Harp crown!” Comedian/ Director, David Steinberg in The National Post of Canada said “I have an album called “Moving To The Country by Paul Rishell & Annie Raines that Lyle Lovett recommended to me and it’s just sensational.” While their guitar, harmonica, and vocals are roiling, muscular, and masterful, their shows are down home-friendly and fun-loving.” – Scott Alarik, Boston Globe “Rishell’s ability to convey the essence of acoustic Delta Blues is shocking. His guitar playing is tremendous. His vocals are exceptional…” – Skyland Blues News

4-18-2014 – THE JAMES HUNTER SIX
In the early Nineties, Van Morrison caught James Hunter at a gig in Wales and subsequently hired him as a backup singer for several years of touring and recording. James appeared on Morrison’s live album, “A Night in San Francisco,”, and on the studio set, “Days Like This.” About Hunter, Morrison said, “He’s one of the best voices and best kept secrets in British R&B and soul.” In 2006, GO Records/Rounder released “People Gonna Talk,” the first James Hunter album ever issued in the US. With its affectionate echoes of Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson, the disc became an airplay staple on some of the nation’s most influential radio stations. The Los Angeles Times praised James Hunter’s “extraordinary soul voice”; Rolling Stone called his album “a treat not to miss.” By the year’s end, “People Gonna Talk” was among the Top Ten “Best Albums of 2006” as cited by Mojo, USA Today and the WFUV listeners’ poll, to name a few. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album and James himself was nominated as Best New/Emerging Artist in the annual Americana Music Awards. His next album, “The Hard Way” earned even better accolades, with Rolling Stone calling it “unbelievably awesome” and the New York Times praising Hunter’s “tight, slithery groove” and “sweet growl.” The album featured a guest appearance by avowed Hunter fan Allen Toussaint, and like its predecessor reached #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. Hunter toured extensively behind it, both as a headliner and supporting the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Chris Isaak, Boz Scaggs and others. “The new James Hunter Six album, ‘Minute by Minute,’ on Daptone Records was produced by label co-founder Gabriel Roth, who nails the sound of R&B in its formative years when it was part rock ‘n’ roll, part jump blues, all swing and swagger. It’s a marvelous fit with Hunter’s own swoons, croons, screams and rips as he and the group time-warp back to the early days of AM rock radio, minus the static.

4-26-2014 – THE FOOLS

Known for their outrageous live performances the band quickly gathered a loyal and ever-growing audience. European tours including shows with Cheap Trick and Journey resulted in huge overseas record sales. Back home again The Fools released their biggest album “World Dance Party”. The band then enjoyed MTV video success with their remake of Manfred Mann’s “Doo Wah Diddy” and the title track video “World Dance Party”. 5-2-2014 – CHRIS SMITHER
25 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country – stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany of the Boston Globe to write: “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.” Audience members may put it a little less elegantly: “I peed my pants.” What separates Paula from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. Poundstone says: “No two shows I do are the same. It’s not that I don’t repeat material. I do. But my shows, when they’re good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party.” Her newest comedy CD, “I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them in Boston” was recorded live at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston and was released on April Fool’s Day 2013. Paula has amassed a list of awards and accolades that stretch the length of a great big tall guy’s arm. In the early 90’s she was the first woman to win the cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Special and the first woman to perform standup at the prestigious White House Correspondents Dinner where she joined the current President. In March, 2013, she joined Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Rivers and several other prominent women in comedy for a feature-length documentary produced by Lions Gate to air on Showtime entitled, “WHY WE LAUGH TOO: Women of Comedy.” She has starred in comedy specials on HBO and BRAVO, won an Emmy Award, served as “official correspondent” for The Tonight Show during the 1992 Presidential race, pioneered the art of backstage commentary during an Emmy telecast, steps up to the plate for causes she believes in, and is almost always included in any compendium be it film, television or print, noting comedic influences of the 20th/21st century, most recently, “We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy.” She appears on “Late Night w/Craig Ferguson” about 3 times a year and she’ll do an occasional editorial for NPR’s “All Things Considered”.

5-3-2014 – DUELING PIANOS
What are dueling pianos? It is a massive “to the top of your lungs” sing along with all your friends! Two grand pianos are center-stage with a team of outrageously talented pianists that seem to know every song ever written. Each show is different because it’s all request. And you or your friends might get called up onstage for a bit of good humored fun and some unforgettable u-tube moments. These shows are request oriented, interactive sing-a-longs wherein two piano players sit across from each other and trade songs. The dueling piano audience is used for the dueling aspect of the show. Audience members are pitted one-side-against-the-other. Examples of rivalries include country vs. rock, men against women, etc. People do love to interact and have fun. The piano players act as the “Entertainment Directors,” responsible for maintaining enthusiasm and maximizing laughs. Hand-picked from only the finest regional talent, they are experts on keeping audience members involved, happy and singing. Dueling piano shows often take unexpected turns, like involving wait staff members, changing song lyrics or roasting popular audience members. There aren’t many boundaries. It’s an all-ages show that is the perfect entertainment anyone who like to have fun; one big sing-along party, swaying to the music and bellowing-out familiar lyrics. You’re not just being entertained by the piano players – you are part of the show! “Think YOU won’t sing along? Just TRY not too…. I dare ya!” – Bill Connors

5-4-2014 – JUNIOR BROWN
The more than amazing Jamieson “Junior” Brown is an American country demon guitarist & singer. He’s released nine studio albums and has charted on the Billboard Country Singles chart. His signature instrument is the “guit-steel” double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar. Junior quickly became a local success in Austin, Texas, as the house band at the Continental Club. His debut album was 1990’s “12 Shades of Brown,” released by the British Demon Records; it was re-released in 1993 on Curb Records in the U.S., followed by “Guit with It.” In 1995, Brown released “Semi Crazy,” and followed it with 1997’s “Long Walk Back.” In 1996, he was featured on the Beach Boys’ now out-of-print album “Stars and Stripes Vol. 1” performing a cover of their 1962 hit “409”. The song features Junior playing guitar and singing lead with the Beach Boys singing harmonies and backing vocals. He appeared in the music video for “Honky Tonk Song” by George Jones in 1996 and also won the CMA Country Music Video of the Year award that year for his video, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” which featured 6-foot-7-inch Gwendolyn Gillingham. Junior’s music has been showcased on various TV shows and movie soundtracks, including Me, Myself and Irene, SpongeBob SquarePants and the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard remake, in which he also played the narrator. Although the man plays such neotraditional country styles as honky-tonk, Western swing, etc., few of his performances will finish without some blues and Tex-Mex tunes playing as well as surf-rock instrumentals. If you’re already a fan then you know what all the fuss is about. But if you haven’t heard Junior live, “Guit With It”

5-9-2014 – FIVE O’CLOCK SHADOW
Five O’Clock Shadow – More than 20 years ago (1991 to be exact), five guys got together to do some street singing. They started with simple doo wop and jazz harmonies. At a time when doo wop was considered “contemporary” a cappella, these five guys wanted more from vocal music. They began to experiment. They found ways to make drum sounds with their mouths and imitated instruments such as trumpets, harmonicas, and guitars. Eventually, imitation simply wasn’t enough. With the help of simple stomp pedals, they incorporated wahs, tremolo, phaser, flanger, and distortion into their arrangements. What began as a simple a cappella group morphed into a vocal powerhouse unlike anything the world had heard or seen before. Audiences across the United States, Europe, and Asia have been witness to this revolutionary form of a cappella. FOCS has bred many of the world’s greatest vocal percussionists including Jeff Thacher, Wes Carrol, Samrat Chakrabarti, and David “Stack” Stackhouse. Their award winning album “Wonders of the World” was labeled as “one of the most influential CDs of the past decade.” This album garnered so much fame, the group was able to perform the title track as part of the “Wonders of the World Halftime Show” at the NFL hall of fame game in Canton, OH. They have toured with many famous acts including, but not limited to The Boston Pops, Aaron Neville, Edwin McCain, Patty LaBelle, Cool and the Gang, Blessed Union of Souls and James Brown. VH1 labeled them as “the best undiscovered vocal band,” and Instant Magazine wrote, “these guys take the ‘art form’ of a cappella music to a new jaw-dropping level…what ‘true’ alternative means.” Over the years, members have come and gone, but one thing remains the same…they continue to maintain a high level of musicality and innovation. “A cappella that rocks” – The Improper Bostonian “it’s all voices, all the time, though you’ll swear you hear drums and guitar” – The Washington Post * Students – bring your student ID to receive a $5 coupon at the door good for food or drink.

5-15-2014 JIMMY VAUGHAN & the TILT-A-WHIRL BAND (Sold Out)
THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT! Jimmie Vaughan is far more than one of the greatest and most respected guitarists in the world of popular music. As Guitar Player Magazine notes, “He is a virtual deitya living legend.” His musical ethos and personal style have had an impact on contemporary culture, from spearheading the current blues revival with The Fabulous Thunderbirds to his longtime, innate fashion sense of slicked-back hair and sharp vintage threads, to becoming a premier designer of classic custom cars. But for Jimmie, none of that is part of a crusade or a career plan. It’s just his natural way of living life.
5-17-2014 – ERIC LILLJEQUIST, DEAN ADRIEN & STEVE ABDU (Ballroom)
Sometime in the mid 60’s Eric Lilljequist formed the Boston Country-Rock band The Orphans. A few years later, while taking vocal lessons from legendary voice teacher Dante Bavone, who worked with Faye Dunaway, Peter Wolf & Steven Tyler, Eric met his musical partner, guitarist/vocalist Dean Adrien, at the suggestion of Bavone. Their harmonies were a perfect fit, like Lennon/McCartney or The Everly Brothers. Along with bassist Steve Abdu and drummer Richard Adelman, they caught the attention of Epic Records, and released a pair of singles. The name got changed to Orphan and Ed Mottau, who worked with John Lennon, took over as Manager. During this time, they were performing on record and live with Jonathan Edwards of “Sunshine Go Away Today” fame. Four Eric Lilljequist compositions showed up on Edwards’ 1973 Atco release “Have a Good Time for Me,” the title taken from Eric’s song “Have Yourself a Good Time for Me” which also appeared on Orphan’s final London release, “More Orphan Than Not.” Lilljequist and Adrien played on Edwards’ first three Atco albums. Orphan played on bills with Martin Mull, The McKinney Brothers, Travis Shook & the Club Wow and toured the country opening for the Allman Brothers, the Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Hot Tuna and Jessie Colin Young, even recording at Young’s house. Orphan backed up Chuck Berry at the Cape Cod Coliseum and Lilljequist and Adrien performed with Bo Diddley at Symphony Hall. Later on they became, and still are, Tom Rush’s main backup singers; appearing on “Tom Rush; Live at Symphony Hall”. Also, see their own show here at Bull Run on December 7. Seeing Eric and Dean perform together as a duo is a rare and wonderful experience. Their voices still blend together like two pieces of a grand puzzle. Eric’s voice is reminiscent of Van Morrison and Boz Scaggs but is pure Eric in the end. And whether he’s playing acoustic or electric, his guitar work is first rate. To see them live is to understand the word “perform”. What they give out in concert is from the soul and can’t be bottled or easily traded on the net. You’ll know when you see them that you’re witnessing greatness. And now, at this show, with the addition of Steve Abdu on bass… This is definitely “More Orphan than Not” !

5-17-2014 – GARLAND JEFFREYS (Sawtelle Room)
Forty years into his storied career, Garland Jeffreys is enjoying the kind of creative second wind most artists can only hope for the first time around, earning a swarm of critical accolades and experiencing his most prolific stretch in decades. “Truth Serum,” his second album in two years, is a cri de cour, a stripped-down tone poem from an artist taking his rightful and hard-earned place in the musical pantheon. Long known for his amazing roster of supporting musicians; Dr. John, Sonny Rollins, James Taylor, Phoebe Snow – Garland is an edgy singer-songwriter / urban poet whose work should be taught in schools. From his first big hit, “Wild in the Streets,” Garland has shown an amazing ability to fuse Rock, R & B, Soul, Jazz, Blues and Pop into something truly his own and unclassifiable. His recent, highly acclaimed “The King Of In Between” includes contributions from Duncan Sheik and old friend Lou Reed, and has been on a number of year-end “best of” lists including Rolling Stone and NPR Music. After a string of records in the seventies including “American Boy & Girl,” “One-Eyed Jack” and “Ghost Writer,” the eighties brought the fiercely rocking “Escape Artist,” which yielded radio favorites “R.O.C.K.” and a cover of garage classic “96 Tears.” After “Guts for Love,” a record chronicling the ups and downs of a long-term relationship, Jeffreys returned with “Don’t Call Me Buckwheat,” a complex and searingly honest exploration of being biracial in America. “I couldn’t be happier with the new record. It’s been a labor of love and it’s completely true to me, a real reflection of everything I stand for. I’m back and I plan to remain on the never-ending tour.” “If there’s a better record this year, I haven’t heard it…an old-school rocker with a timeless mind. His new album is an urban poet’s masterpiece.” – Steve Morse “This record is a good a classic roots rock record as you’re going to hear from anybody this year.” – NPR “All Things Considered” “Even as the rides shut down, this New York rocker, returning from too long in exile, makes Coney’s magic live.” – USA Today

5-29-2014 – SHELBY LYNNE
Born to be a singer Shelby Lynne was raised in rural Alabama by musical parents who stressed individuality and the importance of standing apart from others. A terrible student, but avid reader, she loved the written lyric and a beautiful melody. Around the house she was surrounded by country music from the past, Hank Williams, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings and old 45’s that belonged to her parents stacked high with Everly Brothers, Beatles, Elvis. The harmonies that came so naturally to her from such an early age stemmed from her mother, a naturally gifted singer who guided her while riding to school on cold Alabama mornings with her younger sister Allison, singing three part harmonies in the car to pass the time. She started playing guitar by age seven, and later, married to her high school sweetheart, and with dreams of country music success in mind, they moved to Music City. She was offered a record deal at CBS Records where legendary producer Billy Sherrill came out of semi retirement to produce her first record. It included a duet with country legend George Jones, who praised Lynne’s ability to “own a song at such an early age.” After five albums in Nashville, Lynne enlisted Bill Bottrell, who produced Michael Jackson, Madonna, and had big success with Sheryl Crow on the highly successful Tuesday Night Music Club. The album, “I Am Shelby Lynne,” was recorded in 1998 to immediate success and she was awarded the Best New Artist GRAMMY® in 2000 – after nearly 13 years in the business. “Love, Shelby” was released in 2001, followed by a pair of intimate, self-produced albums “Identity Crisis” (2003) and “Suit Yourself” (2005). She made her acting debut in 2005, playing Johnny Cash’s mother in the motion picture “Walk the Line.” “Just a Little Lovin’,” her critically acclaimed tribute to Dusty Springfield, was released in 2008. Lynne recently founded her own label, EVERSO RECORDS and “Tears, Lies, And Alibis,” EVERSO’s first release, debuted at No. 16 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart in April of 2010. A Top 10 hit at Americana radio, it was hailed by Newsday as “her strongest album in a decade,” a sentiment echoed by numerous critics. She followed “Tears, Lies, And Alibis” with her first-ever holiday collection, “Merry Christmas,” released in the fall of 2010. “Revelation Road,” Shelby’s most personal record, was released in 2011. And in November of 2013 she released “Thanks,” of which Mother Jones Magazine says “Her sultry, commanding voice has rarely been more effective than on these bracing country-soul tunes…’Walkin’ closes the proceedings on an exuberant gospel note, casting a warm glow that invites instant replay.”

5-31-2014 – ROYAL SOUTHERN BROTHERHOOD
OK, all you folks that have been emailing, asking me to please bring them back (there are a lot of you, and you know who you are). Here’s your chance to catch RSB in our intimate setting. For the rest of you, if you like blues/rock/funk/soul and you only catch one show this month, make it this one. I promise, you won’t be sorry. Think Allman Brothers meet Neville Brothers. Think James Brown, Government Mule & The Meters jammin’ in a smoky New Orleans after-hours joint. The Brotherhood’s incendiary front line consists of one of the last great southern soul singers, percussionist and vocalist extraordinaire Cyril Neville (Neville Brothers, the Meters), lead guitarist and singer Devon Allman (son of Gregg, nephew of Duane) and award-winning blues guitarist and songwriter Mike Zito. The powerhouse rhythm section of bass player Charlie Wooten (the Wood Brothers) and drummer Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman) rounds out the Brothers’ lineup. Incubated in the heat and humidity of a New Orleans summer, Cyril, Devon and Mike began jamming at a secluded studio in the city’s Garden District. When the musical sparks began to fly and the personal chemistry coalesced, they looked at the real idea of forming a band. Their debut show in September, 2011 at the city’s Rock ‘n’ Bowl tore the roof off the place and launched a horde of YouTube videos that burned across the internet. RSB has it all: incendiary playing with the twin lead guitars of Allman and Zito; Neville’s funky percussion work woven into the solid rhythm section of Wooton and Scott; lead vocals and three-part harmonies that drip with soul and passion; and a boatload of songs that deliver on the promise of what this band brings to the table with its musical chops. Their highly anticipated debut recording, “Royal Southern Brotherhood,” was released by Ruf Records last May, debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 17 weeks. As Cyril Neville says, “this new band makes a mighty good gumbo.” And he would know… Bon appetit.

6-14-2014 – AMY BLACH & SARAH BORGES celebrate Muscle Shoals
“Sock It To Me” A Soulful Celebration of the Music of Muscle Shoals Join Boston-based songwriters / vocal powerhouses, Amy Black and Sarah Borges with a killer backing band to celebrate the soulful music of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Amy and Sarah will perform classic songs originally recorded in Muscle Shoals, by Otis Reading, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Lou Rawls and others, as well as a few originals that embody the spirit and soul of Muscle Shoals. Don’t miss this powerful night of music! This show, recently performed in Boston to a full house was created by Amy Black after releasing a four-song EP “The Muscle Shoals Session” recorded this summer in Muscle Shoals, her family’s home place, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Spooner Oldham, keys player for Aretha Franklin, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and many others. The EP will be available for sale at the show. Amy Black is a singer/songwriter with storytelling and Southern tradition in her blood. In record time, she’s become one of the most sought after acts in the East sharing stages with Chris Isaak, The Courtyard Hounds, Rodney Crowell, and Emmylou Harris and headlining at top venues. The Boston Globe described her music as, “Americana in its broadest definition, rooted in folk and country but with tinges of Southern soul and blues.” Besides The Muscle Shoals Session, on February 4 she will release “This Is Home,” a full album of original music recorded in Nashville. Sarah Borges: To watch Sarah Borges strut and howl onstage is to participate in rock ‘n’ roll communion, all glistening sweat and high kicks, soul-shaking and sassy antics. She’s a modern-day retro spitfire, red lipstick curled in a smirk as she summons her six-string to conjure a host of fiery spirits, leaving a stunned and ecstatic audience in her wake. This same raucous energy shoots through her fourth studio album, Radio Sweetheart, which is a statement of Borges’ future as much as it is a reflection of her past. Funded entirely by fans, the new album is a sea change marking a split from both Sugar Hill Records and her longtime band the Broken Singles, set in motion by a road weariness, six years of constant touring and the home-is-where-the-heart-is lure of brand new motherhood.

6-15-2014 – DUNCAN SHEIK
An American Grammy-and Tony-winning singer-songwriter and composer. Duncan Sheik initially found success as a singer, most notably for his 1996 debut single “Barely Breathing”. Years later, he expanded his work to include compositions for motion pictures and the Broadway stage, leading him to involvement in the multiple award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Working continually with Steven Sater, Sheik wrote the music for the Tony award winning musical “Spring Awakening” over a period of eight years. The musical, which premiered off-Broadway in New York in May 2006, opened on Broadway to much critical acclaim in December 2006. Spring Awakening is based on the controversial German expressionist play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Sheik won two Tonys for his work on the musical for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score and the show won the Tony for Best Musical. The original cast recording album, released in December 2006, received the Grammy Award in 2008 for Best Musical Show Album. The guitar Sheik used to compose songs for Spring Awakening is on display at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. In 2009 he released “Whisper House” with singer-keyboardist Holly Brook and in 2012, “Covers Eighties Remixed” with Samantha Ronson, El-P, Gabriel & Dresden and Chico Mann. He is now working in his recording studio in Garrison, NY on a new album of original material which should be out by the time of this show. Duncan will be accompanied on this tour by keyboardist Jason Hart and drummer Doug Yowell.

6-20-2014 – QUINN SULLIVAN
Six years ago multi-GrammyTM winning blues guitarist Buddy Guy had a remarkable encounter when eight-year-old guitarist Quinn Sullivan joined him on stage. Guy was so taken with his incredible guitar skills that he invited him to play on his GrammyTM nominated album “Skin Deep” (that also included guest performances from Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi) and tour with him nationally. Quinn’s blistering solo on the record was the aptly titled “Whose Gonna Fill Those Shoes?” He was soon being invited to perform at festivals, TV and radio programs. So far, he has appeared Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ellen, Oprah and The Today Show and was featured in Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines. He has been actively building his craft sharing stages nationally with Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang and BB King at iconic venues including the Hollywood Bowl, the Apollo Theater and the Beacon. Quinn received a major honor being the youngest artist to play the world renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and will be performing at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Garden in April, along with an all-star lineup. Now fourteen, Sullivan has an album on SuperStar records, “Getting There,” set for release this on June 18, just in time for this show. Produced and co-written with Grammy, ASCAP and BMI award winner, Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, BB King), the album will appeal to hard-core blues fans and rock aficionados and to fans craving authentic, guitar driven, grooves and melodies. Quinn, as it happens, is as adept at vocals as he is at making his beloved Stratocaster sing. John Heithaus of SuperStar Records, said: “Triple threat artists like Quinn are truly rare. He is a prime example of today’s new breed of songwriters, musicians and performers and we have high aspirations for him!” Legendary jazz guitarist John McLaughlin said: “He’s unbelievable … and he plays just like Jimi (Hendrix)!” Buddy Guy says: “You don’t come across talent like this every day. People called Ray Charles a genius? I think you’ve got another one here.”

6-27-2014 – THE OUTLAWS
For The Outlaws, it was always about the music. For 40 years, the Southern Rock legends celebrated triumphs, endured tragedies and survived legal nightmares to remain one of the most influential and best-loved bands of the genre. Now they return with new music, new focus and an uncompromising new mission: It’s about a band of brothers bound together by history, harmony and the road. It’s about a group that respects its own legacy while refusing to be defined by its past. But most of all, it’s about pride. “It’s About Pride” is the new album from The Outlaws, a record 4 years in the making and perhaps 20 or more in the waiting. And for original Outlaws singer/songwriter/guitarist Henry Paul, it’s a hard-fought revival whose success can be measured in old fans and new music. “Because The Outlaws have been out of the public eye for so long, it’s almost like starting over,” he explains. “But because of the band’s history, we’re seeing this as a new chapter. We’ve written and recorded this album on our own terms, and we’re out to make a significant impression. What our fans loved then they still love now, but most of all, they recognize the heart & soul of what it is we still do.” For co-founding drummer/songwriter Monte Yoho, the journey is both bittersweet and jubilant. “I still think about the friends we made when we first came into this industry, how we struggled to define this thing that became known as ‘Southern Rock’,” Yoho says. “This new album embodies all the things we shared musically and personally, as well as the relationships we have with our fans to this day. It’s about where we’ve been, where we’re going, and why we still love to do this.” Formed in Tampa in 1972, The Outlaws known for their triple-guitar rock attack and three-part country harmonies became one of the first acts signed by Clive Davis (at the urging of Ronnie Van Zant) to his then-fledgling Arista Records. The band’s first three albums “The Outlaws,” “Lady In Waiting” and “Hurry Sundown” featuring such rock radio favorites as “There Goes Another Love Song”, “Green Grass & High Tides”, “Knoxville Girl” and “Freeborn Man” would become worldwide gold and platinum landmarks of the Southern Rock era. Known as ‘The Florida Guitar Army’ by their fans, The Outlaws earned a formidable reputation as an incendiary live act touring with friends The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band and The Charlie Daniels Band as well as The Doobie Brothers, The Who, Eagles and The Rolling Stones. For Henry Paul, Monte Yoho, Billy Crain, Chris Anderson, Dave Robbins and Randy Threet it’s about a band of brothers who love playing their own style of rock, and who 40 years ago first got the chance to take it from Florida to the world.

6-28-2014 – AL KOOPER
Legendary keyboardist, songwriter, and producer, Al Kooper appeared on Bob Dylan’s classic albums Highway 61 Revisited (1965) and Blonde on Blonde (1966), and he produced New Morning for Dylan in 1970. He also toured as a member of Dylan’s band off and on over the years. He was a member of the influential group The Blues Project from 1965 to 1967, and he formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, remaining with the group for its debut album Child Is Father to the Man (1968). Kooper was also the principal songwriter for both bands. As if all of that weren’t enough, he also appeared on and produced 1968’s platinum Super Session album with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. In addition to his legendary ’60s work, Kooper has recorded and released over 10 solo albums over the last 40 years, including his latest release, 2008’s White Chocolate. He has played as a sideman on albums by George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, The Who, Cream, and many more. He also discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced the band’s first three albums, which include the iconic tracks “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” and “Saturday Night Special.” Kooper has also lent his production talents to The Tubes, Nils Lofgren, Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills, Appaloosa, The Don Ellis Band, Lenny White, B.B. King, Green On Red, Jimmy Vivino, David Essex, Johnny Van Zant, a Harry Nilsson tribute album, and many other projects. His autobiogarphy, Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards, was published in 1998 and was critically hailed as one of the best rock books ever written. Al Kooper has been there, done it all and lived to tell about it. A one of a kind show.

6-28-2014 – OCCIDENTAL GYPSY (Ballroom)
OCCIDENTAL GYPSY play a high energy, acoustic fusion of gypsy swing, jazz & world music that is like wine and chocolate for your ears…. David Bromberg says, “Great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, with high energy originals that left the crowd crazy. An awesome band.” Playing a dynamic, multi-genre mix of original vocal and instrumental pieces along with notable covers like a “gypsyfied” take of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, OG rouses audiences with lightning speed violin & guitar work. This riveting mélange of uptempo, high-energy gypsy swing, melded with the catchy melodic hooks of pop and and the more complex structures of jazz delivers a thrilling auditory experience. Gypsy Jazz started out as European cafe music known as Jazz Manouche and pioneered by Gypsy Swing founders, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. Occidental Gypsy has taken the Gypsy sound that originated in Eastern Europe and brought it here to blend seamlessly with contemporary American music. Interestingly, Gypsy Swing was created by taking American Jazz to the East and blending it with the Gypsy Folk tradition. Now almost a century later Occidental Gypsy brings the music back home.

7-11-2014 – ZACH DEPUTY
Zach Deputy has made his mark thus far as a touring powerhouse. As a boy, the music of his Puerto Rican, Cruzan and Irish heritage was cooked up in the South Carolina heat. The Calypso rhythms and folk songs of St. Croix competed with the R&B / soul of pioneers like James Brown and Ray Charles for space on the family stereo. As Deputy honed his craft, a unique hybrid of these influences emerged, ultimately creating the signature Zach Deputy sound. To bring this sound to the stage, the big, impossibly upbeat South Carolinian with the infectious smile puts on a solo show enhanced by looping technology that is essentially a one man dance party offering up what he calls “Island-infused, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Gospel-Ninja-Soul” to the enthusiastic crowds of dancers who flock to clubs from coast-to-coast. It is these late night dance parties more than 250 per year that have made Zach Deputy one of the hottest up-and-coming performers on the camping festival circuit and “jam band” scene. For Zach, most days begin in a hotel room and end a couple of hours after walking off stage. On his newest release, Another Day, Zach demonstrates his extraordinary ability to perform and record in multiple contexts and conveys the sensibilities of a mature singer/songwriter. Another Day offers another look at Zach Deputy and seeks to help him cross over into other audiences. Rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs, the music on this recording is best described as soulful rhythm and blues, with flavors of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder emerging in the swells, changes and modulations of the music, in the voice and even in the lyrical content. The record will appeal to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, but the origins of the style and feel remain classic. “With lyrics becoming the core focus and in-between number conversation with the crowd ruling the night, it was a fantastic display of two of the things that make Zach Deputy the special talent and player that he is – his authenticity in demeanor and overall delightful personality… and that amazing voice that you never see coming.” – Honest Tune

7-12-2014 – JIMMY THACKERY & THE DRIVERS
Though most associate Jimmy Thackery with his 15 years as the co-founder of one of the most respected bands in the business, The Nighthawks, he has since been on the road doing nearly 300 shows a year, proving each night that he is still the guitar powerhouse of the blues. Whether he headlines a festival in South Dakota or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he’ll always unleash an intense volley of rockin’ blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. After Thackery left The Nighthawks he formed a six piece R&B band, The Assassins, an all-star R&B, funk band from the DC area, and recorded three albums with them. Then, in ’92, he put together his three piece power trio called The Drivers to highlight his explosive guitar playing and hit the blues highway. The 1990’s were a fabulous time for the band, playing close to 300 shows a year and recording eight discs for Blind Pig. Because every record is more about originals than covers, he began to travel to Nashville to work out his songs with some of the best songwriters in the biz. This was not about Jimmy Thackery goes country. This was about Jimmy Thackery rocks the blues. Jimmy and the Drivers rock the house, then burn it to the foundation. And when you walk away you can still “feel the heat” and see the embers burning.

7-18-2014 – RICK DERRINGER
Young guitar great, vocalist and entertainer Rick Derringer was 17 when his band The McCoys recorded the No.1 hit “Hang On Sloopy” in the summer of ’65, knocking “Yesterday” by The Beatles out of the top spot. After four years of successful touring, Rick merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969 forming Johnny Winter And (“And” referring to the McCoys). Rick was the only producer of all gold and platinum Winter Brothers recordings. In ’71 he was featured on three records, “Johnny Winter And”, “Johnny Winter And-Live” and “Edgar Winter’s White Trash”. “And” featured the first version of Derringer’s “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo.” Eventually he joined Edgar Winter’s White Trash full-time and produced the gold LP, “Roadwork”. Derringer’s solo album, “All American Boy” was released in ’73 with the already popular “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”, this time as a ‘hit’ single. Rick was writer/producer of Johnny Winter’s “Still Alive and Well” album and player/producer of the hit album, “They Only Come Out At Night.” The latter featured the No. 1, Grammy nominated monster hit, “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride”. In ’76 Rick created the Derringer Band, releasing four albums and in ’83 returned to his solo career with “Good Dirty Fun.” Through the ’70s and ’80s Rick appeared on albums with artists Alice Cooper, Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Barbra Streisand, Kiss, Mason Ruffner and Madam X. In the mid-80’s, he discovered Weird Al Yankovic, producing music for his Grammy-winning albums and videos. Derringer’s productions of the Michael Jackson parodies, the No. 1 hit “Eat It”, and “Who’s Fat,” have been Yankovic’s most successful recordings. Rick recorded four blues CD’s starting in ’93, “Back To the Blues,” “Electra Blues,” “Blues Deluxe” and “Jackhammer Blues.” And then came his destined-to-be-classic “Tend the Fire.” In 2001 he ventured back into Rock & Roll with Vanilla Fudge superstars Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, producing a recording of intense synergy – D B A (Derringer, Bogert & Appice) with vocals, writing and instrumentals shared by all three. On and on it goes, and after more than four decades Rick Derringer is still going strong!

7-26-2014 – MAX CREEK
Legendary. Contemporary. Ever evolving. This is Max Creek. For over 40 years, Creek has been blowing minds with their unmistakable blend of Americana, country, rock, calypso and jazz. Over 200 songs in the current catalog guarantee different shows with different songs every night. Max Creek was the first “Jam Band” before such a term existed. Billy Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead and Mike Gordon of Phish are among Creek’s longtime fans. Creek has built an ever-expanding multi-generational fanbase concentrated in New England, but also spread nationwide through years of touring and hosting annual festivals such as Camp Creek and StrangeCreek. 2014 started with a bang with Max Creek playing the 4th annual Jungle Jam on Jaco Beach in Costa Rica. Max Creek are contemporary innovators of the improv scene, and the band that everyone you know knows someone who has seen them pushing the envelope of the live music experience. The music is always joyous, and their stage is full of smiles and laughter, both during and between songs. All one has to do is glance into the crowd to see that the feeling is contagious. And Creek is most definitely a family. 40-odd years in, the audience is a multi-generational stew; it’s not uncommon to witness old-school Creek Freeks getting down with their teenage (or older!) kids. They just have that uncanny songwriting style with a nimble, melodic and focused approach to improvisation that has endeared them to thrill seeking listeners long before the word “jamband” crossed a human’s lips.

8-2-2014 – IRIS DEMENT
One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of our day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born on January 5, 1961 in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, however, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to Kansas City to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, Dement first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights, in 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. Dement did not make her recording debut until 1992, when her independent label offering, “Infamous Angel,” won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record’s word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros., which reissued Infamous Angel in 1993 as well as its follow-up, 1994’s stunning “My Life.” Her third LP, 1996’s eclectic “The Way I Should,” marked a dramatic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound but also in its subject matter; where Dement’s prior work was introspective and deeply personal, The Way I Should was fiercely political, tackling topics like sexual abuse, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. In 1999, she collaborated with country man John Prine on his album, “In Spite of Ourselves.” Dement recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the following year. Her newest album, “Sing the Delta,” was released in October, 2012 and is her most personal and moving album to date. In fact, the first time you play the album through it may seem simple and sparse. Play it again; it will grow and grow on you until you can’t get it out of your soul. It’s that good.

8-8-2014 – TINSLEY ELLIS
“In the last five years, no one has released more consistently excellent blues albums than Atlanta’s Tinsley Ellis…” – Philip Van Vleck, Billboard.com “the most significant blues artist to emerge from Atlanta since Blind Willie McTell.” -Atlanta Magazine Hard-rocking blues-soaked guitarist/vocalist/song-writer Tinsley Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Ellis attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, following in the tradition of Deep South musical heroes Duane Allman, Freddie King, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. His live shows feature extended fretwork filled with melodic and rhythmic experimentation in the spirit of jam bands like his friends Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers. If you like the Blues of: Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers & Johnny Winter, you’ll love Tinsley. Ellis shows off his full range of explosive fretwork on his newest release, “Midnight Blue,” which will be available for signing after the show.
