| 3-22-2014 – SAMANTHA FISH Have you been following Samantha’s career? If not, you should take notice now, she is all over the place, pouring her heart out in her music, her shows, backing her favorites, never forgetting her fans. She is the whole package with icing on the cake. Kansas City-based Samantha Fish has been on a major roll ever since she teamed up with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde on Ruf’s 2011 release, Girls with Guitars. Fueled by the trio’s Blues Caravan tour of Europe and the U.S., she created an international buzz in the blues world. Later that same year she recorded “Runaway,” her debut on Ruf, which mixed gutsy riff-blues rockers like “Down In The Swamp” with the mellow small-hours jazz of “Feelin’ Alright,” and earned her a string of rave reviews and radio airplay, climaxed by her winning the Blues Music Award (BMA) for “Best New Artist Debut” in 2012. Earlier this year Samantha joined labelmate Devon Allman for a sultry duet of the Tom Petty classic, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Rather than trying to duplicate her first success, on her latest release, ‘Black Wind Howlin’,’ Samantha re-defines her sound throughout the tracks. She can be brutally rocking on cuts like the tour bus snapshot of “Miles To Go” (“Twelve hours to Reno/ten hours til the next show”), the swaggering “Sucker Born” (“Vegas left me weary, LA bled me dry/skating on fumes as I crossed the Nevada line…”) and the venomous “Go To Hell” (“Oh, this ain’t my first rodeo/You hit yourself a dead end/Your voodoo eyes, ain’t gonna cast a spell/So you can go to hell!”). It wasn’t that long ago that a teenaged Samantha Fish showed up at her local Kansas City blues club, Knuckleheads Saloon, and began soaking up the sounds of visiting modern blues guitar masters like Mike Zito and Tab Benoit, then going back to ’80s heroes like Stevie Ray Vaughan and following the lineage to the pre-war Delta masters. “I fell in love with it,” she told Premier Guitar of her growing passion for the form, “and started doing my homework by listening to the old guys like Son House and Skip James.” With those influences as her template, Samantha incorporated the sounds of the classic rock of The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, The Black Crowes and even a tip of the hat to Heart, in putting together a sound that would become her own. “It’s all the sounds I grew up with,” she explained at the time, “with my own spin.” It’s been a wild ride for Samantha Fish and she has proven her staying power every inch of the way. | 3-28-2014 – FARRENHEIT Charlie Farren and David Hull met when both were with The Joe Perry Project in 1980. After touring with The Project in support their CBS record, “I’ve Got The Rock And Rolls Again.” it became clear that Aerosmith was on a path to re-unite. Charlie and David decided to form their own, new band and began writing and experimenting with band formats, eventually choosing a trio format after meeting drummer John Muzzy In 1986 Charlie, David, and Muzz formed Farrenheit and released a self titled debut album on Warner Bros. Three singles from that album, “Fool in Love,” “Bad Habit,” and “Lost in Loveland,” as well as video exposure on MTV and extensive touring established Farrenheit as one of the premier new rock acts and won band awards and kudos across the country. But more importantly, it won the band fans, who responded to the potent combination of well-written songs delivered by a powerful, veteran rock trio. “We signed with Warner Brothers on the strength of our songwriting and performance,” explains Charlie Farren. Farrenheit really never fit with the big hair and tattoo crowd that emerged shortly after the debut Farrenheit CD came out in 1987. | 4-26-2014 – THE FOOLS APRIL IS THE FOOLEST MONTH ! The Fools barged their way onto the Boston music scene with their first single “She Looks All Right in the Dark”. Known for their outrageous live performances the band quickly gathered a loyal and ever-growing audience. Their first national (and then international) hit record, “Psycho Chicken,” was a parody of Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer. With the signing of the band to EMI Records came the first two albums “Sold Out” and “Heavy Mental”. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. | 5-4-2014 – JUNIOR BROWN The more than amazing Jamieson “Junior” Brown is an American country demon guitarist & singer. He’s released nine studio albums and has charted on the Billboard Country Singles chart. His signature instrument is the “guit-steel” double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar. Junior quickly became a local success in Austin, Texas, as the house band at the Continental Club. His debut album was 1990’s “12 Shades of Brown,” released by the British Demon Records; it was re-released in 1993 on Curb Records in the U.S., followed by “Guit with It.” In 1995, Brown released “Semi Crazy,” and followed it with 1997’s “Long Walk Back.” In 1996, he was featured on the Beach Boys’ now out-of-print album “Stars and Stripes Vol. 1” performing a cover of their 1962 hit “409”. The song features Junior playing guitar and singing lead with the Beach Boys singing harmonies and backing vocals. He appeared in the music video for “Honky Tonk Song” by George Jones in 1996 and also won the CMA Country Music Video of the Year award that year for his video, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” which featured 6-foot-7-inch Gwendolyn Gillingham. Junior’s music has been showcased on various TV shows and movie soundtracks, including Me, Myself and Irene, SpongeBob SquarePants and the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard remake, in which he also played the narrator. Although the man plays such neotraditional country styles as honky-tonk, Western swing, etc., few of his performances will finish without some blues and Tex-Mex tunes playing as well as surf-rock instrumentals. | 5-9-2014 – FIVE O’CLOCK SHADOW Five O’Clock Shadow – More than 20 years ago (1991 to be exact), five guys got together to do some street singing. They started with simple doo wop and jazz harmonies. At a time when doo wop was considered “contemporary” a cappella, these five guys wanted more from vocal music. They began to experiment. They found ways to make drum sounds with their mouths and imitated instruments such as trumpets, harmonicas, and guitars. Eventually, imitation simply wasn’t enough. With the help of simple stomp pedals, they incorporated wahs, tremolo, phaser, flanger, and distortion into their arrangements. | 5-17-2014 – ERIC LILLJEQUIST, DEAN ADRIEN & STEVE ABDU (Ballroom) Sometime in the mid 60’s Eric Lilljequist formed the Boston Country-Rock band The Orphans. A few years later, while taking vocal lessons from legendary voice teacher Dante Bavone, who worked with Faye Dunaway, Peter Wolf & Steven Tyler, Eric met his musical partner, guitarist/vocalist Dean Adrien, at the suggestion of Bavone. Their harmonies were a perfect fit, like Lennon/McCartney or The Everly Brothers. Along with bassist Steve Abdu and drummer Richard Adelman, they caught the attention of Epic Records, and released a pair of singles. The name got changed to Orphan and Ed Mottau, who worked with John Lennon, took over as Manager. During this time, they were performing on record and live with Jonathan Edwards of “Sunshine Go Away Today” fame. Four Eric Lilljequist compositions showed up on Edwards’ 1973 Atco release “Have a Good Time for Me,” the title taken from Eric’s song “Have Yourself a Good Time for Me” which also appeared on Orphan’s final London release, “More Orphan Than Not.” Lilljequist and Adrien played on Edwards’ first three Atco albums. Orphan played on bills with Martin Mull, The McKinney Brothers, Travis Shook & the Club Wow and toured the country opening for the Allman Brothers, the Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Hot Tuna and Jessie Colin Young, even recording at Young’s house. Orphan backed up Chuck Berry at the Cape Cod Coliseum and Lilljequist and Adrien performed with Bo Diddley at Symphony Hall. Later on they became, and still are, Tom Rush’s main backup singers; appearing on “Tom Rush; Live at Symphony Hall”. Also, see their own show here at Bull Run on December 7. Seeing Eric and Dean perform together as a duo is a rare and wonderful experience. Their voices still blend together like two pieces of a grand puzzle. Eric’s voice is reminiscent of Van Morrison and Boz Scaggs but is pure Eric in the end. And whether he’s playing acoustic or electric, his guitar work is first rate. To see them live is to understand the word “perform”. What they give out in concert is from the soul and can’t be bottled or easily traded on the net. You’ll know when you see them that you’re witnessing greatness. And now, at this show, with the addition of Steve Abdu on bass… This is definitely “More Orphan than Not” ! |

| 5-29-2014 – SHELBY LYNNE Born to be a singer Shelby Lynne was raised in rural Alabama by musical parents who stressed individuality and the importance of standing apart from others. A terrible student, but avid reader, she loved the written lyric and a beautiful melody. Around the house she was surrounded by country music from the past, Hank Williams, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings and old 45’s that belonged to her parents stacked high with Everly Brothers, Beatles, Elvis. The harmonies that came so naturally to her from such an early age stemmed from her mother, a naturally gifted singer who guided her while riding to school on cold Alabama mornings with her younger sister Allison, singing three part harmonies in the car to pass the time. She started playing guitar by age seven, and later, married to her high school sweetheart, and with dreams of country music success in mind, they moved to Music City. She was offered a record deal at CBS Records where legendary producer Billy Sherrill came out of semi retirement to produce her first record. It included a duet with country legend George Jones, who praised Lynne’s ability to “own a song at such an early age.” After five albums in Nashville, Lynne enlisted Bill Bottrell, who produced Michael Jackson, Madonna, and had big success with Sheryl Crow on the highly successful Tuesday Night Music Club. The album, “I Am Shelby Lynne,” was recorded in 1998 to immediate success and she was awarded the Best New Artist GRAMMY® in 2000 – after nearly 13 years in the business. “Love, Shelby” was released in 2001, followed by a pair of intimate, self-produced albums “Identity Crisis” (2003) and “Suit Yourself” (2005). The Brotherhood’s incendiary front line consists of one of the last great southern soul singers, percussionist and vocalist extraordinaire Cyril Neville (Neville Brothers, the Meters), lead guitarist and singer Devon Allman (son of Gregg, nephew of Duane) and award-winning blues guitarist and songwriter Mike Zito. The powerhouse rhythm section of bass player Charlie Wooten (the Wood Brothers) and drummer Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman) rounds out the Brothers’ lineup. | 6-15-2014 – DUNCAN SHEIK An American Grammy-and Tony-winning singer-songwriter and composer. Duncan Sheik initially found success as a singer, most notably for his 1996 debut single “Barely Breathing”. Years later, he expanded his work to include compositions for motion pictures and the Broadway stage, leading him to involvement in the multiple award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Working continually with Steven Sater, Sheik wrote the music for the Tony award winning musical “Spring Awakening” over a period of eight years. The musical, which premiered off-Broadway in New York in May 2006, opened on Broadway to much critical acclaim in December 2006. Spring Awakening is based on the controversial German expressionist play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. Sheik won two Tonys for his work on the musical for Best Orchestration and Best Original Score and the show won the Tony for Best Musical. The original cast recording album, released in December 2006, received the Grammy Award in 2008 for Best Musical Show Album. The guitar Sheik used to compose songs for Spring Awakening is on display at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. | 6-20-2014 – QUINN SULLIVAN Six years ago multi-GrammyTM winning blues guitarist Buddy Guy had a remarkable encounter when eight-year-old guitarist Quinn Sullivan joined him on stage. | 6-28-2014 – AL KOOPER Legendary keyboardist, songwriter, and producer, Al Kooper appeared on Bob Dylan’s classic albums Highway 61 Revisited (1965) and Blonde on Blonde (1966), and he produced New Morning for Dylan in 1970. He also toured as a member of Dylan’s band off and on over the years. He was a member of the influential group The Blues Project from 1965 to 1967, and he formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, remaining with the group for its debut album Child Is Father to the Man (1968). Kooper was also the principal songwriter for both bands. As if all of that weren’t enough, he also appeared on and produced 1968’s platinum Super Session album with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. In addition to his legendary ’60s work, Kooper has recorded and released over 10 solo albums over the last 40 years, including his latest release, 2008’s White Chocolate. He has played as a sideman on albums by George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, The Who, Cream, and many more. He also discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced the band’s first three albums, which include the iconic tracks “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” and “Saturday Night Special.” Kooper has also lent his production talents to The Tubes, Nils Lofgren, Mike Bloomfield, Stephen Stills, Appaloosa, The Don Ellis Band, Lenny White, B.B. | 7-11-2014 – ZACH DEPUTY Zach Deputy has made his mark thus far as a touring powerhouse. As a boy, the music of his Puerto Rican, Cruzan and Irish heritage was cooked up in the South Carolina heat. The Calypso rhythms and folk songs of St. Croix competed with the R&B / soul of pioneers like James Brown and Ray Charles for space on the family stereo. As Deputy honed his craft, a unique hybrid of these influences emerged, ultimately creating the signature Zach Deputy sound. To bring this sound to the stage, the big, impossibly upbeat South Carolinian with the infectious smile puts on a solo show enhanced by looping technology that is essentially a one man dance party offering up what he calls “Island-infused, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Gospel-Ninja-Soul” to the enthusiastic crowds of dancers who flock to clubs from coast-to-coast. It is these late night dance parties more than 250 per year that have made Zach Deputy one of the hottest up-and-coming performers on the camping festival circuit and “jam band” scene. | 7-12-2014 – JIMMY THACKERY & THE DRIVERS Though most associate Jimmy Thackery with his 15 years as the co-founder of one of the most respected bands in the business, The Nighthawks, he has since been on the road doing nearly 300 shows a year, proving each night that he is still the guitar powerhouse of the blues. Whether he headlines a festival in South Dakota or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he’ll always unleash an intense volley of rockin’ blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. After Thackery left The Nighthawks he formed a six piece R&B band, The Assassins, an all-star R&B, funk band from the DC area, and recorded three albums with them. Then, in ’92, he put together his three piece power trio called The Drivers to highlight his explosive guitar playing and hit the blues highway. The 1990’s were a fabulous time for the band, playing close to 300 shows a year and recording eight discs for Blind Pig. Because every record is more about originals than covers, he began to travel to Nashville to work out his songs with some of the best songwriters in the biz. | 7-18-2014 – RICK DERRINGER Young guitar great, vocalist and entertainer Rick Derringer was 17 when his band The McCoys recorded the No.1 hit “Hang On Sloopy” in the summer of ’65, knocking “Yesterday” by The Beatles out of the top spot. After four years of successful touring, Rick merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969 forming Johnny Winter And (“And” referring to the McCoys). Rick was the only producer of all gold and platinum Winter Brothers recordings. In ’71 he was featured on three records, “Johnny Winter And”, “Johnny Winter And-Live” and “Edgar Winter’s White Trash”. “And” featured the first version of Derringer’s “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo.” Eventually he joined Edgar Winter’s White Trash full-time and produced the gold LP, “Roadwork”. Derringer’s solo album, “All American Boy” was released in ’73 with the already popular “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”, this time as a ‘hit’ single. Rick was writer/producer of Johnny Winter’s “Still Alive and Well” album and player/producer of the hit album, “They Only Come Out At Night.” The latter featured the No. 1, Grammy nominated monster hit, “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride”. In ’76 Rick created the Derringer Band, releasing four albums and in ’83 returned to his solo career with “Good Dirty Fun.” Through the ’70s and ’80s Rick appeared on albums with artists Alice Cooper, Richie Havens, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Barbra Streisand, Kiss, Mason Ruffner and Madam X. In the mid-80’s, he discovered Weird Al Yankovic, producing music for his Grammy-winning albums and videos. Derringer’s productions of the Michael Jackson parodies, the No. 1 hit “Eat It”, and “Who’s Fat,” have been Yankovic’s most successful recordings. Rick recorded four blues CD’s starting in ’93, “Back To the Blues,” “Electra Blues,” “Blues Deluxe” and “Jackhammer Blues.” And then came his destined-to-be-classic “Tend the Fire.” In 2001 he ventured back into Rock & Roll with Vanilla Fudge superstars Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, producing a recording of intense synergy – D B A (Derringer, Bogert & Appice) with vocals, writing and instrumentals shared by all three. On and on it goes, and after more than four decades Rick Derringer is still going strong! |

| 8-2-2014 – IRIS DEMENT One of the most celebrated country-folk performers of our day, singer/songwriter Iris Dement was born on January 5, 1961 in rural Paragould, AR, the youngest of 14 children. At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music. During her teenage years, however, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. Upon graduating high school, she relocated to Kansas City to attend college. After a series of jobs waitressing and typing, Dement first began composing songs at the age of 25. Honing her skills at open-mic nights, in 1988 she moved to Nashville, where she contacted producer Jim Rooney, who helped her land a record contract. Dement did not make her recording debut until 1992, when her independent label offering, “Infamous Angel,” won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. Despite a complete lack of support from country radio, the record’s word-of-mouth praise earned her a deal with Warner Bros., which reissued Infamous Angel in 1993 as well as its follow-up, 1994’s stunning “My Life.” Her third LP, 1996’s eclectic “The Way I Should,” marked a dramatic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound but also in its subject matter; where Dement’s prior work was introspective and deeply personal, The Way I Should was fiercely political, tackling topics like sexual abuse, religion, government policy, and Vietnam. In 1999, she collaborated with country man John Prine on his album, “In Spite of Ourselves.” Dement recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the following year. Her newest album, “Sing the Delta,” was released in October, 2012 and is her most personal and moving album to date. In fact, the first time you play the album through it may seem simple and sparse. Play it again; it will grow and grow on you until you can’t get it out of your soul. It’s that good. |
